The Original Adam Garcia

The Misunderstanding & Explanation

After the last scene, Vi’s phone rings again and she picks it up, thinking it’s Kevin. It’s the hospital. Her father has been hit by a car at his job working at the toll booth. Vi rushes to the hospital and while her father will be okay, she realizes how much he means to her. Gloria, her friend who is still in her wedding gown, comes to console her. When Vi comes home from the hospital, there’s a box of mail with a note that says this mail was too big to fit in her box. It’s all the tapes she’d mailed out to record companies, returning her unsolicited tapes. Despondently, she throws them down the stairwell. The next scenes are short, showing Vi by her phone, trying to get the courage to call Kevin. This next scene leads to the “big misunderstanding.”

The scene opens outside the door of Kevin’s apartment (we’ve seen it before when he stood out there in his underwear when Vi came by for a goodnight kiss.) Kevin is unlocking the door for a beautiful, leggy blond.

Kev:      It’s a palace…

Girl:     It’s pretty late…are you sure you want to do this now?

Kev:      Here’s my door…no turning back now…come on in.

Girl:     (walking in) Oh, you’re so right…this place is a palace!

Kev:      I like it here…(he closes the door, and you continue to hear their unintelligible voices)

[At this moment, the shot cuts to outside the door, in the stairway, where Vi appears in the shadows. She’s heard it all, believing Kevin has found someone else. She leaves.]

Next come scenes of Vi working on her music on the rooftop of her apartment. Time passes. She’s got a new job in a “real” restaurant. Lil, her boss from Coyote Ugly, comes  to tell her she can come back anytime, but Vi assures her she’s okay—they have a nice exchange of dialogue and Lil leaves. The next scenes show Vi seeing a poster announcing “Songwriters Showcase,” a venue for songwriters to sing their songs to be heard by important music moguls. A few days pass. Vi comes home to her apartment; there’s a message on her machine that the Songwriters Showcase loved her CD and wants her to perform. The next scene is Lil at Coyote Ugly, making a sign that they’re closing early to go see “Jersey’s” (Vi’s Coyote name) debut at the Showcase. Then the next scene is inside Kevin’s apartment again; Kevin and the“new blond” are there.

Girl:     I can’t thank you enough for subleasing me this place…you don’t know how long I looked…

Kev:      And when’s your boyfriend moving in?

Girl:     He’s actually coming in tomorrow from Boston…what are you going to do in Chicago?

Kev:      (sighing) I’ll figure that out when I get there.

[Kevin is about to leave, when the phone rings. He picks it up.]

Kev:      Hello?

Lil:       Hey, do yourself a favor and look at page 137 of ‘The Voice’—
