With both her father and Kevin disapproving of Vi working at Coyote Ugly –her dad is ashamed of what she does and Kevin wants her to focus on her dream to write great songs—Vi is somewhat estranged from both of them, confused and lonely. She comes home alone one night after her friend Gloria’s wedding, frantically tries to unlock her door but can’t get in fast enough as Kevin leaves a message on her answering machine.

Kev:      Violet, I’ve just finished work and I’m going to unload three disgusting fish trucks—I though maybe you’d like to come and give me a hand…

[Vi is still wrestling with her key in the lock, but can’t get the door open]

Vi:        (to the door, frustrated)  Open-open-open!

Kev:      …but you’re not in, or…you’re not picking up…so, I’ll call back…because I’m hoping one day you…might want to talk…

Vi:        (finally gets in and picks up the phone, but he’s already hung up)  Kevin? Hello?
