ATTENTION:This synopsis reveals the end of the movie, so don´t read if you don`t wanna know!!! - Thanks to CJ for translating it.
Like on almost every day Patrick Doherty (James Naughton) swims to a little private Island in front of the Florida shore. The Mid-Fifty year old doesn´t survive the way back. His body is found on the beach in front of his house.
Patrick’s son, Scott (Adam Garcia), flies in for the funeral and takes care of his mother, Maureen (Jacqueline Bisset). Both are devastated - Patrick was a former Olympic swimmer, who was in very good shape even for his age. He loved and enjoyed life a lot.
Shortly after the opening of his Last Will, Maureen declares that she would like to go on a cruise to get her mind free. Scott, who stays behind, goes on his very own journey through the past: he is searching his father’s old belongings and discovers his blood high pressure drugs. In his melancholy, he starts to doubt that Patrick Dougherty really drowned.
Maureen returns from her journey with a big surprise - Oliver Vance, whom she has met onboard the ship. Scott, who still has to get over his father’s death, doesn’t like his mother’s new boyfriend at all.
Life does have another two surprises for Scott - the arrival of Oliver’s beautiful daughter Kelly (Alice Evans) followed by Maureen’s decision to marry Oliver. Scott finds a related soul in Kelly: She is also not very keen on her dad’s wedding plans. Moreover, the two, Scott and Kelly, feel very attracted to each other. As Kelly reveals that her mother also died under mysterious circumstances and that she also blames Oliver for her death, Scott is waking up. He asks his old friend and lawyer Phil to research Oliver’s background. To his disappointment there is no evidence found, which could incriminate Oliver.
On the day of the wedding, things are way too much for Scott. He leaves the wedding ceremony and hides on the roof of the city hall. Kelly follows him and comforts him. An embrace turns into a dangerous game of love. Scott enjoys the thrill of the moment.
During their parents’ honeymoon, Scott and Kelly use their absence to get closer. One day, as Kelly takes a few of Maureen´s sleeping pills, she gets bad convulsions. She is delivered to hospital. Doctors explain to her, that side effects like this happen to people with high blood pressure. Scott remembers the drugs his father took. Since Patrick’s death was seen as an accident, no autopsy and toxicological examinations were made. Scott insists on exhuming his fathers body in the middle of the night.
As the toxicological test shows remains of Maureen’s sleeping pills in Patrick’s blood, Scott’s theory about murder seems confirmed. Scott has to ask himself, if Maureen might be involved in his father’s death. Scott and Kelly find a picture of Maureen and Oliver, that was taken more than a year ago – proof enough, that the two had an affair long before Patrick’s death.
Suddenly Kelly confesses, that she wasn´t honest to Scott concerning the death of her mother. She didn’t die on a sugar shock, like Kelly first stated, she died in a car crash that was caused by Patrick Doherty. Scott is shocked and starts now to suspect Kelly too. Had she anything to do with his fathers death?
The next morning Scott accidentally overhears, that Oliver – who returned from the honeymoon with Maureen in between – tries to sell the private Island of the Dohertys. Scott confronts his mother, but she only has lazy excuses.
In the meantime Kelly talks with Oliver about Patrick’s death. Oliver doesn’t answer and tries to seduce her. Soon it becomes clear, that their relationship isn’t the one of a father and daughter. Kelly’s suspicion, that Oliver could have killed Patrick is more and more confirmed. Oliver, who now knows that Scott knows, accelerates his plans. He drives to the island and manipulates the gas oven of the little cabin. The cabin was build by Scott and his father. Moreover, he controls a window in the back of the house. As Maureen arrives, soon it becomes clear what Oliver has planed: right at the beginning of the conversation, Oliver takes Maureen’s cigarettes but returns them to her before he leaves the room – knowing that only seconds will pass until Maureen will light one of them. But as Oliver wants to open the window on the backside of the house to get out, his escape route is blocked: Scott shifted some woods in front of the window so that there is no way out for Oliver. He now tries to stop Maureen from lighting a cigarette, but its too late. The cabin disappears in a huge explosion.
Kelly is the first one to arrive at the hospital. Maureen was killed by the explosion, Oliver survived, but he was badly burned. While Oliver’s heart rate rises and rises, Kelly tells him about her affair with Scott. She watches without reaction as he is losing his breathing machine and starts to choke.
As Scott enters the room, Kelly has already hidden behind a curtain. Oliver is dying, but as Scott tries to help him, he gets surprised by a nurse. He tries to escape but gets caught by the police in the parking lot. They now suspect him to have killed Oliver and his mother. At the police station Oliver gets to know from his lawyer, that Kelly would inherit the whole Doherty estate. The police accuse him of double murder, but before they bring him away to prison, Kelly appears. She confesses, that Oliver is not her real father, she was only adopted by him after her mother’s death. She tells that he was obsessed with the thought of taking revenge on the Dohertys and she could confirm that Scott didn’t kill Oliver. Scott is shocked from what he has just heard but also happy about her statement: the police doesn’t have a choice anymore, they have to let him go.
In the car on their way home, the very insecure Scott cannot keep back his feelings. He tells Kelly that he is not sure if he can believe her anything anymore and trust her. Kelly realizes, that she can´t convince him and tries to get out of the car. Scott is able to stop her but loses control of the car, which overturns. Kelly is the first to wake up and pulls Scott out of the wreck of the car. He is still unconscious and she starts to cry. Over and over again she tells the unconscious Scott how much she loves him. Scott wakes up and returns her love. He might never know what is going on inside her, but this is not a reason, not to love her.
