BOOTMEN DIARIES Part 5
Tales from the set when Adam spent May-August 1999 in Australia filming the Tap Dancing movie Bootmen. Thank you to Hilary Linstead (The Producer of Bootmen) for keeping the diary and Fiona for submitting to us on a weekly basis.
Saturday 17 July
Miracle, the sun is shining! This is a three-locations day to get the exterior days that have banked up. We're all buoyed up by the great weather and completed the first two scenes by 2pm. Then over to Nobby's Point, a Newcastle landmark, to shoot the love scene at dusk. Mercifully, we're blessed with a beautiful sunset and in record time complete the sequence. Now it's back to Sydney for four weeks. We're over half way through the shoot. Everyone's looking forward to their own bed.
Monday 19 July
On location at La Perouse, where we are shooting scenes set in Sean annd Mitchell's home. The trials of filmmaking continue. Our Sydney location manager, Peter Hicks, discovers that the people living next door to our location are planning to start demolition on their house on Tuesday! This would, of course, pose a considerable sound problem for us. We persuade them to delay demolition by two days.
Tuesday 20 July
Adam is delivering a wonderful performance. I hear from his agent that he's receiving a lot of enquiries - most exciting. I have no doubt that he has a very big future ahead.
Wednesday 21st July
Rain in Newcastle, wind in Sydney. The poor actors and crew have the wind at what seems like gale force whistling round their legs. Fortunately, one scene wasconfrontational and the actors' discomfort fuelled the anger needed for the scene.
Thursday 22nd July
We are still on location at La Perouse. We have been unable to prevent the start of demolition next door to our location any longer. The demolishers cause a scare for the crew when asbestos is feared present in the roof. Work stops and Environmental Protection Services and Council are called out to incvestigate with our Safety Officer. Crew fears are swiftly put to rest. We lose one hour from our shooting day.
Friday 23rd July
Murray Pickett, our Production Designer, has designed and constructed a wrecker's yard next door to our production offices. All in the interests of saving travel time. a crew from Australian Film Institute is shooting Murray at work in the art department. Murray has been nominated for an AFI Design Award for his work on the Percy Grainger movie Passion.
Tuesday 13th July
A chance to watch Adam tapping solo all day. He has had to pace himself, as he is in almost every scene in the film. Showed his brilliance and the technique which helps the camera department considerably. He always hits his mark!!!
Monday 26th July
Sean (Adam) and Linda (Sophie Lee) at the Canterbury Ice Rink. An attempt at tapping on ice. Dein, Emma Schofield (our First Assistant Director) all have falls and bruises. Our nurse, Judy King, is kept busy! In the afternoon we move to Canterbury Girls High School to film an Eisteddfod with young Sean (Vaughn Sheffield ) and young Mitchell (Christian Patterson). It's always a very tough call to move location and shoot scenes in both in one day., but our schedule is very tight, so it has to be. Heavy traffic in Sydney wastes hours of crew time.
Tuesday 27th July
This is Derrick's (Lee Mcdonald) big day - Derrick is recruited for the BOOTMEN at the strip club where he works as a bouncer in our story. He and two strippers perform a "strip tap". Flurry in the make-up department when Lee's moustache goes missing. It's already been established in the film and has to be found - finally located in a dustbin. Relief all round.
