Coyote Ugly
Here are some early thoughts and observations from Susan Moneypenny, our US correspondent - on the opening day of the movie in the US - 4 August. Thanks for staying up till all hours Susan to share this with us and sitting through Adam's film 3 times in one day. Your devotion to duty does you credit. |

1) Adam first appears in a bar 11 minutes after the opening credits and the first shot of him is also reminiscent of Tony "working" the bar. Vi asks the bartender who she could give her demo tape to and she turns to see Kevin shown greeting female patrons, and while I believe there is dialogue there, it is really unintelligble or non-descript on purpose. The first words we really hear him utter are "Hey, how ya' doin'?" as he leans over to kiss one of the patrons (lucky girl!). The bartender leads Vi to believe Kevin is the "music manager" and suggests she give him her tape. In reality he is a fry-cook, as she soon discovers. The first shot of Adam is quite underlit, as he is supposed to be in the background greeting bar guests, but his smile as he looks to the camera just melted me! 2) Adam actually sings one line ("...baby you're the right kind of wrong...") of Vi's music into his spatula (he's at his fry-cook job) when she comes to pick up the demo tape she had given him when she thought he was an important player in the music business in the club circuit nearby. |

So while it's not "Immortality," it was cute to hear him sing even a little bit. 3) As Randie described, Kevin's bartop dance comes as a result of him being auctioned off to raise $250 to pay the fire marshall's fine. (Hell, I would have paid a LOT more than $250!!!) Somehow I was under the impression (maybe from the chatroom visit last autumn from Adam himself?) that Kevin was in a drunken state when he was on the bar. Definitely not so! He is genuinely surprised and shocked that he's being recruited to do this, but Vi sees it as "payback" for him having duped her earlier into believing he was a music manager. Definitely the best scene in the movie--the auction and striptease! 4) Adam has his first movie fight scene in Coyote Ugly. It was general mayhem and not lots of choreographed stunts, but it looked real enough. Vi failed to appear at a club Kevin had arranged for her to sing at so that some important music people could hear her, and when she was a no-show, he goes to The Coyote Ugly and walks in just in time to see her dancing on the bar where a drunk patron has jumped up to join her, and the drunk starts touching her suggestively. Even though Vi is in control and handles the drunk well, Kevin is furious and jealous and starts the fight. Vi ends up getting fired for this because she broke one of Lil's two rules: (1) Appear available but don't BE available and (2) No boyfriends visiting in the bar. 5) I was STUNNED to see how YOUNG Adam appears. You'd think after seeing so many pictures of him over so long a period, I would have known exactly what to expect, but he still looks like he's about 20-21 in this film. (And it wasn't just me--each of the 4 women who saw the film with me at one time or another during the day commented on how young he looks. Of course, they also mentioned what a cutie pie he is as well.) 6) The movie grew on me. Perhaps it was because I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning reading many horrendous reviews, and then only had 3 hours of sleep, went to work and then took the afternoon off to watch it three times in succession--but I must say I wasn't too impressed the first time I saw the film. I too thought it was hokey, very predictable, and with many cliqued lines. However, the friend who saw it with me first was much more favorably impressed, while I downplayed it. But right off the bat, I knew it wasn't nearly as bad as many critics made it out to be. But by the third showing, which started at 7:10 p.m., the audience really got into the movie (of course, the theater was full by then and hadn't been at the earlier showings) with lots of laughter at the lines, many hoots, hollers and catcalls when Adam/Kev was dancing, and of course by the guys whenever the girls appeared in scenes at The Coyote Ugly Bar. At the end of the 3rd showing, a small group of people scattered throughout the audience actually APPLAUDED. 7) Several critics said that the bar scenes were great and there should have been more of them, or more fleshing-out of the characters of the other Coyotes. Many cited that the scenes to move the plot between bar scenes were slow, boring, unnecessary, etc. However, since nearly ALL if not all were scenes with Adam, this didn't bother me one bit! He is actually on screen a LOT of the time! 8) The soundtrack grew on me as well. When I first heard the songs that Violet supposedly writes, I thought, ho-hum, no big deal. But hearing them again and again left me with a more positive impression. My friend gave me the soundtrack for my birthday, and I just listened to it while writing this diatribe, and it brought back pleasant images of the movie. The added bonus is that there are several photos of Adam in the CD cover notes that I had not yet seen in stills elsewhere, including one of him and Vi wrapped in the bedsheets and he's leaning over to kiss her. There is also one of Adam dancing on the bar! So even if you're not crazy about the soundtrack, it's a must-have for the photos.
